Ceramic & Porcelain Tile FAQ

Answers to common sourcing, product-selection, testing and installation-planning questions.

Use these answers to prepare inquiries and identify the product data your project requires. Referenced figures are general industry guidance; destination-market rules and the project specification take priority.

What information should I include in a tile inquiry?

Include the product or effect, preferred size and finish, estimated quantity, destination country or port, intended application and company name. Model numbers or screenshots make comparison faster.

Can I request tile samples before placing an order?

Yes. Share the products or series you want to review. Record the approved sample together with its model, finish and written specification before confirming a bulk order.

What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

TCNA defines porcelain tile as ceramic tile with water absorption of 0.5% or less when tested using ASTM C373; non-porcelain ceramic tile is above 0.5%. Low absorption alone does not prove suitability for every floor, exterior or wet-area application..

How do I choose between matte and polished tile?

Matte and polished describe appearance, not a guaranteed slip rating. TCNA’s ANSI A326.3 summary associates the Interior Wet category with a wet DCOF of 0.42 or higher , or a manufacturer-declared classification. Traffic, contaminants, wear and maintenance still matter..

Can one tile design be available in several sizes?

Yes. Some Ceraglow products list several available dimensions. As a nominal-area example, 600×1200mm covers 0.72m², 750×1500mm covers 1.125m² and 800×800mm covers 0.64m² per tile before joints and waste.

What does rectified tile mean for grout joints?

Rectified edges are mechanically finished for more consistent dimensions, but they do not mean jointless installation. MAPEI guidance citing UNI 11493 states that butt joints are not allowed and joints below 2mm are not permitted. Local standards and the installer’s specification take priority..

What substrate flatness is needed for large-format tile?

For tiles with at least one edge of 15 inches (0.38m), CTEF summarizes an ANSI tolerance of about 3mm over 3m , with no more than about 1.6mm over 0.6m. The installer must verify the project’s applicable standard..

How do I choose tile for wet or outdoor areas?

Start with the declared use, water exposure, slope, climate, traffic and cleaning plan. A 0.42 wet DCOF figure is used for certain level interior wet applications in ANSI guidance, but exterior areas require project-specific assessment and manufacturer guidance.

How should buyers confirm quality before shipment?

Confirm the approved sample, model, size, finish, shade expectations, packing, inspection criteria and documents in writing. ISO 13006:2018 defines ceramic-tile classifications and characteristics; ask which specific test method and reported result applies..

What information affects a tile quotation?

The selected model, size, finish, quantity by model, packing, OEM requirements and destination all affect quotation preparation. Share these details instead of requesting a target price without a specification.

Is OEM or private-label packing available?

Send the requested product, estimated quantity, packaging concept and target market. Availability should be confirmed for the specific order before artwork or production is approved.

What should I check when comparing tile suppliers?

Compare product data, sample consistency, test-method references, communication, packing, inspection process, order follow-up and documentation—not only unit price.
